How to Exclude Internal Traffic from Google Analytics 4

Steps to Define Internal Traffic in Google Analytics 4

  • Log into Google Analytics.

  • Click Admin.

  • Make sure the correct property (website) is selected, then click Data Streams.

  • Select the website where Google Analytics 4 is implemented.

  • Scroll down and click Configure Tag Settings under the Google Tag section.

  • Click Show all under Settings.

  • Click Define internal traffic.

  • Click Create to define your internal traffic rules.

  • Change the Rule name to "Internal traffic" and leave the default traffic_type as internal.

  • Set the Match type to "IP address equals" and enter your IP address.

    1. Don’t know your IP? Just Google “What’s my IP address” to find it.

  • and repeat step 10.

Now that you've defined internal traffic, you'll need to create a filter to exclude it.

Steps to Activate the Internal Traffic Filter

  • Log back into Google Analytics.

  • Click Admin.

  • Under Data Settings, click Data Filters.

  • You’ll see a filter for internal traffic. Make sure it's in testing mode.

  • If it isn’t, click the 3-dot kebab menu and select the Test filter.

  • Now test if the filter is working:

    1. Go to ReportsReal-time.

    2. Click Add comparison, then Select dimension.

    3. Search for the test filter name and select it.

    4. Choose Internal Traffic as the dimension value, then click OK.

    5. Click Apply.

  • Open a new browser tab and visit your website.

  • Go back to the Real-time report. You should see 1 user under the test filter, indicating that the internal traffic filter is working.


  • Return to Admin.

  • Go to Data Filters under Data Settings.

  • Click the 3-dot kebab menu and select Activate filter.
