How To Create a Lookalike Audience on Facebook

  1. Open Facebook Business Manager

  2. Navigate to Audiences

    • From ‘all tools’, Click on ‘Audiences’ from the left-hand sidebar.

  3. Choose the Right Ad Account

    • Select the Ad Account you wish to use from the top-right corner. Ensure you are in the correct account.

  4. Start Creating a Lookalike Audience

    • Click “Create Audience” and select “Lookalike Audience.” If it’s your first time creating an audience, the menu may look different. Choose the option for “Lookalike Audience” regardless.

  5. Select Your Source Audience

    • Option 1: Value-Based Sources: Choose this if you’re using a conversion value in your tracking setup. This option allows Facebook to prioritize your highest-value customers when creating the Lookalike Audience.

    • Example: For an e-commerce site tracking purchases with assigned values, use this option.

    • Option 2: Other Sources: If your audience is not value-based or is a previously created custom audience, select this option.

  6. Set Up Value-Based Source

    • Select Source: Typically, this will be your company’s Facebook Pixel.

    • Select Event: Choose an event that generates a substantial audience (minimum 100 people in a single country).

    • Review Your Source Audience: Ensure the data makes sense by comparing it with your other analytics tools. If the data is off, revisit your tracking setup.

  7. Set Up Other Sources

    • Select an audience previously created or not based on conversion values.

    • Tip: The selected audience will determine the characteristics of the Lookalike Audience. For example, selecting visitors to a specific section of your site may skew the new audience toward similar demographics.

  8. Define Audience Location

    • Choose the geographical area where you want to find users similar to your source audience. This can differ from where your source audience is located.

  9. Determine Audience Size

    • Choose the size of your Lookalike Audience as a percentage of the Facebook users in your selected location. Smaller percentages (1%) yield audiences more similar to your source, while larger ones (up to 10%) create broader audiences.

  10. Create the Audience

    • Click “Create Audience.” Note that it may take up to 24 hours for your Lookalike Audience to be ready for use.

  11. Use Your Lookalike Audience in a Campaign

    • Once your audience is ready, apply it to your ad campaigns by selecting it under the “Audience” section at the Ad Set level in Facebook Ads Manager.
